Sunshine soccer at Coleraine High

THIS may be the year of the first 'winter World Cup' since 1978, but the sun definitely shone for Coleraine High School's annual Girls Soccer 7's tournament.

The atmosphere on the day matched the weather as 240 Girls from 16 schools participated in the event playing bright and attractive football.

The hosts had five teams in the event, reflecting the enormous popularity of the sport at the School. Other school’s represented included Dalriada, Coleraine College, Ballymoney High, Dunluce, Cross and Passion and Ballycastle High.

Organisers Richard McCreery and Peter Semple of CHS said: “Football and sport in general is thriving at CHS. This competition provides the girls with an opportunity to show off their skills. The standard is improving year on year, as is the enjoyment.”

This popular tournament, which has doubled in size in recent years, was won for the first time by Dalriada A team who defeated hosts Coleraine High A team 1-0 in the final.

Emma Sloan from Coleraine High netted the Top Goal-scorer award, with 11 goals in eight matches.
