Superb Ports continue their winnings ways

Portrush welcomed Cookstown to Quay Road, looking to continue their promising season.

Portrush looked sharp throughout with crisp passing and movement which Cookstown struggled to cope with. The Portrush right hand side was causing plenty of problems but they were thwarted time and time again by the Cookstown keeper.

It was a minute before the half-time break before the deadlock was broken with veteran Ricky McKinnon capping a fine performance with a goal, pouncing on a loose ball and firing home from close range.

From a trademark surge forward, Farrell’s fine ball into the ‘D’ was executed by the evergreen Frank Shirley for his second of the season. The Ports weren’t finished there and went further ahead when Andy Dalzell despatched an unstoppable drag-flick into the bottom left hand corner.

The Ports pressed forward creating chances at will. Farrell was able to score his first goal on the season when his drive towards goal was deflected passed the helpless Cookstown keeper.

Cookstown scored a late consolation goal which very much flattered the opposition who were second best to every ball during the match. This was a superb performance by Portrush, who played with intensity throughout, and will seek a similar performance in next week’s crucial match against Campbellians.
