Tennis Championship starts this week

WITH Wimbledon now finished and the great Roger Federer claiming his seventh men’s singles title after overcoming Andy Murray, the tennis season is in full swing for local club City of Derry.

It may not have been Murray’s day but on a more local level players from City of Derry Tennis Club had been competing all week in the Fermanagh Open Tennis championships in Irvinestown where all four players managed to secure places in finals day.

Sunday saw Steven McDowell (City of Derry) play Robert Thompson (Letterkenny) in the ‘B’ Men’s semi-final where McDowell was narrowly defeated. Eamon Canning (City of Derry) was in the other ‘B’ Men’s semi-final where he lost a tightly fought match to the eventual winner John Maguire (Irvinestown).

Peter Fryer secured victory in the ‘A’ Men’s Plate beating Andrew Moore (Omagh). Karen Campbell (City of Derry) won the ‘A’ Ladies Doubles with partner Elaine Chambers (Butt Hall) 6-2, 6-0.

It was a successful day all round and City of Derry Tennis Club members are now looking forward to the Tyrone Senior Tennis Championships being held in Omagh from this Friday to Sunday, July 22.
