Tennis tournament at Whitehead

Whitehead Tenis club held junior and senior tennis tournaments last week in conjunction with the local community festival.

The junior tournament on August 3 hosted an excellent turnout of players, ensuring that referee Paul Abraham was kept busy.

All five courts were in use, with players competing in under-12, under-14 and under-18 categories. After a lot of keenly contested singles matches, the winners were: Under-18 boys’ winner, Elliot English, runner-up David Evans; under-14 boys’ winner Ian Dick, runner-up Sam McBride; under-12 girls’ winner Rachel Abraham, runner-up Charlotte English.

The Senior tournament took place on August 4, with a good turnout of players despite the weather. Each person played four matches with different partners and a handicap was in operation which ensured results were close to the finish. At stake was the Rosebowl, presented to the club by the late Gordon Canning.

Winner for the gents’ competition was Robin Larmour, with Alastair McBride runner-up. Joint lady winners were Evelyn Gardiner and Sharon Clarke.

All winners and runners-up were presented with trophies by club captain Daphne Cairns.
