Terrific Telford lowers course record

HE'S had a tough season in terms of championship golf but Rathmore's Wayne Welford hasn't lost the ability to go low around his home track.

The 27-year-old lowered the course record at The Valley to 61 strokes in a recent staging of the Club Championship.

Telford has made a habit of shooting some low numbers at ‘home’. Back in 2005 while competing in the North of Ireland Championship he trimmed a shot off the record held by Padraig Harrington.

The Valley is often considered the ‘little brother’ to the more famous Dunluce links at Royal Portush, but played off the championship tees, it still packs a punch at almost 6900 yards.

“There’s only three times a year that we can actually shoot a course record. That’s the North of Ireland, Captain’s Day and the Club Championship,” said Wayne who carded seven birdies and an eagle in a bogey free round of golf.

The eagle came at the par five fourth hole, where hit a driver off the fairway from 257 yards into a ‘bit of a breeze’ which finished two feet from the hole.

On the back of his record round, Wayne is now playing off +4.5 but with an eight shot lead in the 36-hole Club Championship, he should be able to hold on for victory.

“I’ve struggled this year so it’s good to shoot a low round,” added Wayne.

“It’s been a learning experience. I was included in the Irish panel, and I had to cope with expectations. I was nervous at the North this year going into the event as defending champion.

“Hopefully, things will go better next year.”
