Thatch duo lift Pairs title

Bertha’s Bar was the venue once again on Friday night for the finals of Coleraine & District League Pairs and with many of favourites and past winners already out of this year’s tournament the title was for any of the eight remaining pairs to take.

First up was Owen McLaughlin and Padraig O’Reilly against Pearse McGarry and Michael Sweeney, after taking out Davy Glenn and Gerard Dallas last week Owen and Padraig were favourites in this game, but they failed to reproduce the form of last week and with some steady throwing and good finishing it was Villa players Pearse and Michael who won 3-2 to go into the semis.

Next up was Rodney Kane and Francis Kelly against Eamon Guyler and Roy Friel and it was the Villa men who once again came out on top with a superb display of darts which saw both players regularly hit scores of 100+ and well as taking out their finishes with ease to win 3-0 and set up a semi-final against their teammates.

The first match from the bottom of the draw saw Kellys Inn pair Jason McNeill and Seamus Rodgers play Villa Swifts pair Clark Scott and Martin Barr in what was probably the closest game of the night with both pairs having chances to win, in the end it was the Swifts pair Clark and Martin who hit that all important double to progress to the semis.

The last quarter-final game saw two Thatch pairs come up against each other as Ivan Mullan and Ronan Murray took on team-mates Conrad Watson and John Moore. Both pairs had a good first night in the pairs taking out some of the favourites for the title but Conrad and John were now tipped as favourites and showed why as they eased into the semi’s with a 3-0 win over their teammates.

The first semi-final saw Michael and Pearse play Rodney and Francis and after their stunning performance in the quarter finals Rodney and Francis were hot favourites here but they failed to produce the same darts as before and struggled in this game but eventually came out 3-1 winners to go into the Final. The second semi-final which saw Martin and Clark play Conrad and John was a much closer game than the 3-0 scoreline would suggest but again it was Conrad and John who hit the doubles when needed to move the Thatch pair into the final.

The final proved to be a one-sided affair as Rodney and Francis failed to find any consistency and although had a few chances at the doubles Conrad and John showed that little bit more consistency with steady scoring and a knack for hitting those doubles as they ran out 4-0 winners to lift this years pairs title.
