The cup belongs to Ballinderry as they see off Hillsborough

Ballinderry made it five successive wins in the Lisburn Zone Charity Cup following an exciting four shots win over Hillsborough Social in the final at Eglantine Parish hall.

The match was in doubt earlier after Noel Marsden took a heart attack, but he is recovering in hospital and the match went ahead.

Ballinderry won the former JC Patterson Cup on 15 successive occasions and 17 times in all which is an impressive record.

The final was the best in the Cup for many years with some fine bowling on both sides and the result in doubt until near the end.

After Robert Sloan started with a double, Eddie Marsden came back with one, two, one. Hillsborough responded with three, two, one before Ballinderry levelled with three,one. Social finished with a winning double.

Michael Beattie opened with a double but Paul Reid replied with four, two. A three at the seventh gave Ballinderry a 10-5 lead. Hillsborough added a single but Ballinderry finished with two singles to win by six shots.

The interval score was 20-22 with the handicap included.

Four at the second gave Nick Haire a 4-1 lead but Raymond Stubbs responded with one, three. At the seventh, Hillsborough were 7-6 up but Ballinderry finished with two, one, two to win by four shots.

After starting with a single and a double, Gordon Stubbs was 5-2 ahead at the fifth. Nathan Haire came back with three singles to level with two ends left, but Ballinderry collected two singles and that was the winning margin.
