The manager manages very well at Rathmore!

THERE was an air of quiet satisfaction in the Rathmore clubhouse on Monday morning, particularly in the office where Club Manager Willie McIntyre was basking in the glory of winning the Robert McLean Memorial Cup the day before.

Willie (6) put three birdies and three bogies on his card on the front nine for a halfway score of 21 points.

A two at eleven balanced out his bogie four at the last for another 21 and a total of 42.

All of these back nine points were needed to fend off the challenges of Jonathan Cummings and evergreen Ian Meneely, who took second and third places respectively on countback.

Jonathan carded half a dozen birdies and five bogies in his round but Willie’s better back six told in the end. Ian Meneely had his share of birdies, three at the first, two at the third, four at the tenth, but a bogey at the seventeenth did not help his last six score for the countback and kept him in third spot.

Three players were tied on 41 points, Stephen Dunlop (12), Harry McMurtry (10), and Russell Dunlop (3) took 4th, fifth, and sixth places.

Finally, the other nearly satisfied customer in Rathmore was Wayne Telford.

Last Sunday Wayne thought he had done enough by shooting what is thought to be a course record 61, but had to be content with the best gross prize, this week, albeit over a shorter course setup, he returns another 61 and wins another gross prize for his effort!

Wayne birdied the first five holes of his round, had a hiccup of a bogie four at the sixth and totalled 31 for the front nine.

A couple of birdies were scored early in the back nine together with an eagle three at the thirteenth, but a strong finish gave him two more birdies at 17 and 18 to add 30 shots back and leave him with a gross 61.

“What have I got to do to win”, was Wayne’s quote as he called at the office for some advice from Manager Willie.

This Sunday sees the second round of the Scratch Cup and the Dowds Cup
