The perfect start

SCARVA Rangers made the perfect start to the new league season on Saturday.

The 2012/13 season curtain raiser was a clash with Keady Celtic, who were promoted from Mid-Ulster Division Three at the end of last season.

Scarva enjoyed one of their most successful seasons in many years last season, in the hunt for promotion until the dying embers of the league campaign, and they hinted on Saturday that they could once again be a force to be reckoned with in Division Two.

They were gifted the opening goal of the clash. Stephen Morton forced the visiting keeper to make an agile save and concede a corner, which was subsequently turned into his own net by a Celtic player.

Kris Heron tested the Keady keeper with a couple of stinging shots and Gary McCune volleyed over the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area.

Dean McCammon met a Gregory Douglas corner with a firm header which was well saved by the keeper and he was in action again shortly afterwards to save from McCune.

After the half time interval Douglas and McCammon combined dangerously down the right and Kris Heron executed an overhead kick that flashed over the crossbar.

The important second goal Scarva had been searching for arrived courtesy of a tenacious run from Neil Anderson.

A mistake from the visitors inside the area was then capitalised on by Dean McCammon, who slotted home from close range.

In the late stages Alex Hammond’s header at the back post soared over the bar and the hosts had to settle for a two goal winning margin.

Man of the Match – Neil Anderson.
