Third spot for Clann team

CLANN Éireann were the Orchard County's sole representatives at Ireland biggest bike race last weekend.

The Portaferry three day event, open to Senior 'A' riders was attended by Clann Eireann's Michael Murray, John Heverin, Marty McConville, Barry McConville and Conor Grimes.

The five man team witnessed Lurgan and County Armagh cyclists back competing successfully at top level events.

The Clann envoy were the strongest team on the final stage and claimed third spot in the overall team competition.

Michael Murray had a successful weekend by claiming sixth spot on stages one and three and sprinting to fifth on the fourth and final stage.

John Heverin was the club highest placed rider on general classification finishing seventh out of 64 starters.

Meanwhile on the local scene Clann ireann continued to stamp their dominace on the Mid-Ulster Inter Club competition.

Tenacious riding placed six Clann ireann riders in the top 10. Noel Mulholland, aided by son Declan, reinforced his status as the Clann's fast man by sprinting to an emphatic victory.

Inter Club action continues on Tuesday, August 3, with a road race on the Derrymacesh circuit.

Lurgan cyclists will be preparing for the town's annual premier cycling events when Clann Eireann host the Ulster Senior Criterium Championships and the Classic 70 mile Tour Of Armagh road race on the weekend of August 6-8.

The town will see Ireland's top cyclists battle around the Kitchen Hill circuit in Friday evening's Criterium and sprint for victory on Market street at the end of the gruelling three hour Tour on Sunday. For more information visit www.clanncc.net
