Thirds miss out in thriller

Downpatrick Celtic Seconds 3

Moneyslane Thirds 2

SLANE Thirds travelled to Downpatrick last Saturday to play a league match and it was thrilling game for the locals.

This was another good performance by the Slane although they lost the game. They had the ball in the net four times but two of the goals were judged to be off-side.

Downpatrick got the first goal with a great strike into the top corner of the net. Then Slane replied with an even better goal when Stewart ‘Rusty’ Maginess weighted pass was latched onto by the flying Jordan Fairley who struck his shot first time for a rocket into the roof of the net.

In the second half Downpatrick had a very strong wind at their backs but good defending by Ian Anderson, Mark McCully, Willy Thompson and Clive Hamilton only saw Downpatrick creating two chances which they took well.

Slane’s heads did not drop and as the game went on they started playing the better football and this was rewarded when Slane’s supper sub and right back Matty Kernaghan ran through on goal and was the coolest man on the pitch to riffle it into the bottom near post for a brilliantly taken goal.

Slane tried hard for the equaliser and piled on a lot of pressure on the Downpatrick defence but it wasn’t to be.
