Thompson 'sweat' for Celtic cup tie

LINFIELD are sweating on getting clearance in time for Peter Thompson to make his return to the Blues for their Irish Cup tie on Saturday.

Thompson, who moved from Linfield to Stockport County two seasons ago, has agreed a loan deal with his former club until the end of the season.

However, on Wednesday manager David Jeffrey said the clearance was still not through. "Peter has signed for us but it is taking a bit of time for the paperwork to be sorted out at Stockport County. Hopefully we will get word soon.

"Peter's desire and enthusiasm to come back home to Linfield was excellent. I'm thrilled we have him back," added Jeffrey.

On Monday night Peter was given the famous number 9 shirt - fans will remember all his goals came in the 17 shirt.

"I am so excited at the prospect of getting home and playing for Linfield again," Peter told the Linfield FC website.

"I have been very happy at Stockport. However, everyone is well aware of the financial problems at the club. Unfortunately, it's been a very tough time on and off the pitch. It's been difficult playing in a team bottom of the league after a losing run of 11 or so games.

"The opportunity has presented itself to come home to Linfield for a spell and I want to concentrate on enjoying my football, scoring goals and playing regularly for Linfield.

"Injury wise, this hasn't been too bad a season for me. I've had the odd knock or two but certainly, I haven't missed any games due to injury. I am fit and ready to play. I have been training on a consistent basis and my well documented problems of last year are well and truly behind me.

"For now I'm delighted to be coming home. I'm very happy indeed and can't wait to get started. I believe that things happen for a reason and that's why I've no regrets about joining Stockport or about coming home now. The move has certainly improved me as a player and my aim is to keep on improving in every aspect of my game."
