Three Commonwealth medals for former UUC judoka

FORMER UUC student and Coleraine 1983 Sportswoman of the Year, Joyce Malley, won the Women's Masters title at the XIII Commonwealth Judo Championships in Singapore last week where players from all over the Commonwealth were represented.

Joyce Malley, who is now a black belt 5th Dan and a World Masters champion, started judo at the Ren-bu-kan Club in Dunganon before moving to Coleraine to study education and geography at UUC in the early eighties.

While in Coleraine Joyce played an active role at local judo clubs and represented Northern Ireland many times, winning medals at national and international events including Commonwealth Games and World University Championships.

In addition to her gold medal in the Masters event at Singapore, Joyce won bronze medals in both the under 70kg and Open categories for Northern Ireland.

Joyce, living in New Zealand for the past few years, has retained her local roots and was the only player at the tournament to win three medals.

Other news from Singapore was the re-election of Coleraine coach Richard Briggs to the position of Vice President of the Commonwealth Judo Association for a further four year term.
