Three hard earned points for Derryhirk

ON Saturday Derryhirk travelled the short distance to Tannaghmore Gardens to take on neighbour's Lurgan Celtic in the league and came away with three hard and well earned points.

It took the Hirk at least 20 minutes to adapt to the constant pressure that McCourt and Dummigan where causing them up front.

With captain Steve Flannery back from a head injury and slotting back into that pivotal role in the centre of midfield they began to get at the heart of the Celtic engine.

Tubie McCarron was starting to dominate the defence alongside his partner McGeown and with Magee feeding Geoghan and McLaughlin with some excellent balls it wasn’t long before the Hirk scored their first goal, some great interchange of passes from McGeown to Magee who found Connor McKavanagh on the right side and he whipped in a perfect cross which Keith Totten dove full length with a great diving header to get that all important goal.

Both teams at this stage had chances with McLaughlin and Totton having the best of them.

The second half started with both teams cancelling each other out and most of the hard work was done around the midfield, Gilmore was battling hard along with Ashley Mulholland at left and the Hirk held on to the 1-0 score line to secure the three points.

Special mention for Niall Geoghan for his non-stop running and the defence of Mulholland, Gareth Magee, McGeown and McCarron who worked tirelessly all day to keep Celtic at bay.
