Three is the magic number for Greenisland

Greenisland Ladies 3

Grosvenor Ladies 0

GREENISLAND 1st XI put three goals past Grosvenor without reply on Saturday in their first league game of 2010.

The home side started slowly with a few errors in their initial passing game but Grosvenor failed to capitalise and Greenisland gradually edged their way into the game. As the pressure started to build on the Grosvenor defence, Greenisland were awarded a penalty corner. From the push out Jenny Henry drag flicked the ball into the top left hand corner to give Greenisland the lead.

The game then became quite stale and as time came to 34 minutes of the 1st half Grosvenor were awarded a penalty corner. Superb closing down from the push out by Naomi Deering prevented any Grosvenor shot and half time was reached with Greenisland leading.

After the break Greenisland came out storming. Nikki Cairns was distributing the ball exquisitely and opened up the Grosvenor defence on several occasions but could not score. Eventually Nikki drove into the circle and hit a powerful shot that crashed into the back board giving Greenisland a 2-0 lead.

Grosvenor then had a short period of attack but the Greenisland defence held firm. Eventually Greenisland broke out and swift passing down the pitch allowed Erin McMaw to slot in the third and final goal from the left side of the circle.

Greenisland Ladies Vets XI 2

Knock Ladies Vets XI 1

KNOCK are new to the veterans line-up and fielded a strong team, making it difficult for the home team to by-pass their defences.

And it was Knock who opened the scoring, breaking through Greenisland's back line and sneaking a goal past the keeper. From the re-start, Greenisland immediately took the play to Knock. A superb ball in from Heather Sharpe found Celia Shilliday's stick and Celia wasted no time in scoring the equaliser.

Sustaining the pressure and momentum, Greenisland were awarded a short corner. From this, Mandy Axon (Player of the Match) scored the second goal for Greenisland - taking them 2-1 up at the end of the first half.

The second half was keenly contested but neither team managed to add to their first half goal tallies and the game finished in a 2-1 win for the Greenisland Veterans.

Greenisland Ladies 5th 1

Greenisland Ladies 4th 3

Play got off to a good start, with the 5th XI holding attacks at bay but two quick goals from the 4th XI, from Hannah Loughridge and Alison Haire, put the 5s on the back foot.

The 5s Lindsay Boyd (5th XI player of the match) did manage to score a goal before half-time to bring the score to 2-1.

Loughridge’s fine play was later rewarded with her second goal of the day to bring the final score to 3-1 to the 4th XI.
