Three-par finish earns Ardis victory at Galgorm

The Sweep and Winter League sponsored by McAllister's Butchers, Broughshane continued at Galgorm Castle Golf Club with wet underfoot conditions, a grey sky with intermittent drizzle and a cool wind.

There was a close finish to Division 1 with only one point separating four players. After three Tony Carroll (6) held a slender one point advantage over Raymond Ardis (6) and Brian McFall jnr (4) with Gary McWilliams (4) another point behind after starting with a ‘ding’ at the Fort.

Through Beechers Carroll was joined by Ardis and McFall jnr followed by McWilliams a point behind. Ardis came home with three pars to win by one point from McFall jnr (par, double bogey, birdie), Carroll (two bogeys and a birdie) and McWilliams (birdie, bogey, par) who finished together. McWilliams won the Gross with McFall jnr taking the runner-up placing with a better last six.

In Division 2 approaching the Maple Gareth Marcus (8) and Damian Gillan (8) were leading by a point from Lewis Surgenor (9). Up the Grove Marcus moved into a one point lead from Surgenor with Gillan another two points behind.

Marcus increased his lead over the closing two holes (double bogey, birdie) to win by two points from Surgenor (two bogeys) who was joined by Gillan (two pars) and with a better last six second place went to Surgenor.

Through the Maple in Division 3 Robin Deane (9) had opened up a two point lead over Roy McDowell (11) who in turn was being hard pressed by John Fitzgerald (10) and Cyril Reid (14) a point behind. James Campbell (12), William Rainey (9) (after opening with two ‘dings) and Samuel MacDonald (10) were one, two and three points respectively further behind.

Up the Grove and with two holes left to play Deane was still in the lead by two points from McDowell and Reid. Fitzgerald and Campbell were in close attendance another point back.

Deane increased his lead over the closing two holes with a double bogey and a par to win by three points. Three was a real scramble for the remaining place with McDowell, Reid, Fitzgerald, Campbell, MacDonald and Rainey all finishing together and with a better last six Rainey took second place.

FRONT NINE

Through the Niuc Eric Boyce (12) was leading by one point from Ian Stewart (10) with David Stirling jnr (2) another point behind. Burton after a ‘ding’ at the Niuc was a further point down.

Stewart took over the lead at Broadmeadows by a point from Boyce who was one and two points respectively ahead of Stirling jnr. and Burton. Stewart maintained his one point advantage over Boyce with one to play. An improved Burton with two pars moved to within two points of the leader but Stewart parred the last to win by four points.
