Three tries not enough for sin-binned Bann

A lack of discipline cost Banbridge as they were defeated by Belfast Harlequins in the Ulster League on Saturday afternoon.

That’s the view of their Head Coach Daniel Soper, who saw no less than three of his players sin-binned during the game.

“It was a pretty even match at three tries each but unfortunately for us, they edged it,” he told the ‘LEADER.’

“We spent about 30 minutes of the game with 14 players on the pitch as we had three different players in the sin-bin at different stages. That makes things pretty difficult, especially when the boys are carrying a little bit of food and drink from Christmas. When you’re playing with a man down, it’s always tough. It certainly didn’t make things any easier for us.”

Andy Morrison had given Banbridge the early advantage, touching down the first try of the game to put them 5-0 ahead. Captain for the day, Stephen Irvine added their second try of the game before half-time but the home side, who are a division above Banbridge in the All Ireland League, went into the break with a narrow 11-10 advantage.

Peter Cromie also managed to go over to claim Banbridge’s third try but, despite their clinical edge going forward, their efforts were ultimately fruitless.

“We were pushing hard at the end of the game to try and turn it around but it wasn’t to be,” said Soper.

“We played some good rugby. We got into their 22 four times and scored three tries from it but our poor discipline got us turned around and made things tough for us.”
