Tony Ewbanks joins the 59ers club

TONY Ewbanks (12 now 10) shot one of the best rounds of golf in his career to win the Stableford competition last Saturday.

Tony went round in two over par, gross 71. That gave him a remarkable nett 59 and 46 stableford points. He played brilliant golf throughout and he finished in style with two birdies.

Those two birdies edged Tony clear of John Gallagher (11), who was second with 44 points and Colin Dodds (12), who was third, also with 44 points.

The fourth nett prize went to the club captain, Sydney Pepper (11), who had his best round this season, 43 points.

Paul McAleavey (4) won the best gross prize with a scintillating three under par 66. And that included a lost ball at the 15th hole.

The senior prize went to smooth-swinging Roy McAfee (12) with 42 points.

As usual, there were lots of near misses.

PJ Johnston (12) had 42 points.

Verdun Bond (14), Derek Hanna (13) and Christopher Boyce (10) all had 41 points.

Michael Robinson(11), Kenny Arlow (13), Harry Shannon (12), Jim Cochrane (12), Seamus Rooney (6), Bill McCandless (5), Frank Mooney (20), Bobby Geddis (12) and Lee Willdridge (17) all finished with 40 points.

It is interesting to note that, out of all the players mentioned, only two of them had a handicap greater than 14.

But the man of the moment is Tony Ewbanks with his extraordinary nett 59. Congratulations, Tony!
