Toon team take bronze medal at swimming gala

Friday 1st June was the climax of the Forest Feast Aquasprint Junior swimming league, with 1,500 swimmers, aged 8-12 competing across eight venues throughout Northern Ireland to end a fantastic season of swimming.

The league is split into four divisions, with the top three teams from each competing to become overall section winners and receive the Forest Feast AquaSprint trophy, with promotion for the winners of sections B, C & D.

The teams from Coleraine, Ballymoney and Newry & Mourne battled it out in the neutral venue of Ballymena for the title of Division C winners.

After the photographs and some team chants to get them going, the gala began. The points were read out at the half way stage, with Newry & Mourne narrowly ahead of Coleraine, and Ballymoney in third.

This only added to the excitement as the swimmers knew they had to give their all to help their team to victory. Local rivalry between class mates on opposing teams for Ballymoney & Coleraine added an extra element of competition.

When the final results were announced there was jubilation from three time finalists Coleraine, who had eventually managed to win, ahead of Newry who took silver and Ballymoney in bronze position.
