Top haul for Bill at Islandderry

The fourth round of the Winter League took place at Islandderry Fishery, Dromore on Saturday.

It was one of the worst days of the league weather wise with heavy rain and strong winds but anglers braved the forces and were rewarded by the lake fishing extremely well with a lot of trout being caught and a good number between 5lb and 8lb mostly on buzzers and nymphs.

Bill Johnston, Lurgan took first place in this round with his three fish bag of 13lb10, which included a lovely 6lb4 fish giving him 10 points to bring him up into second place overall in the league. Second place in this round went to Paddy Brunty, Belfast with three fish for 12lb8 keeping him in first place overall while Paddy’s boat partner and brother Liam landed third place with his three fish for 10lb9.

Fourth place went to Lisburn angler Colin McCard with a three fish weight of 9lb7 narrowly beating Belfast angler Sean Gibson who had to settle for fifth place with three fish brace of 9lb6. Sean was having a great day releasing a lot of fish and then landed a lovely 5lb and 7lb8 fish but unfortunately couldn’t count them as he had already bagged up before 11.30am.

The next round of the Winter League is on Saturday 22 February. The fishery is hosting a charity competition ‘Operation Wallacea’ on behalf of Colin & Monica McCard on Saturday 8 February. The competition is fly fishing only and open to everyone with prizes for the heaviest bag of two trout.

The entry fee is £25 which includes boat hire (book in advance), two fish catch and release and lunch. There will also be a ballot.

Monica is a mature student at Queens University studying Marine Biology and is going to Indonesia for five weeks working on her dissertation project. Monica is trying to raise money for the local community that she is going to and the money raised from the competition will be going towards building a school in the local village of Hoga Island, Indonesia.
