Top singles line-up in store for the bowls National finals night

Three singles finals are played on the National finals night and a look at the line-up following the qualifiers at Lisnagarvey High School will show there are three top games in store.

In the first section Paul Reid, Ballinderry beat Cecil Aicken, Sloan Street and Andy Riley, Hillsborough Social, won against Jim Chapman, St Paul’s. Reid beat Riley to go through.

In the other half, John Liggett, Eglantine, lost to Philip Dennison, Loughaghery and Raymond Stubbs, Ballinderry beat James Johnston, Soldierstown. Stubbs beat Dennison to set up a final meeting with clubmate, Reid.

The next group saw Gordon Stubbs, Ballinderry beat Robert Greer, Hillsborough Social and Noel Graham, Loughaghery won against Suzanne Cushnahan, Rock. Stubbs edged Graham in the final.

In the second group, Nick Haire, Hillsborough Social beat Robert McCall, Soldierstown and John Cushnahan, Rock beat Stevie Mulholland, St Joseph’s. Haire beat Cushnahan to set up a final against Stubbs.

In the last group, Edmund Marsden, Ballinderry beat clubmate Albert Morrison and David Verner, Hillsborough Social beat Con Mulholland, St Joseph’s. Marsden beat Verner. Michael Beattie, Ballinderry beat Sam Bates, Eglantine and Nathan Haire was the winner against Gary McWilliams, St Colman’s Lambeg. Haire beat Beattie to set up a final decider against Marsden.

Nathan and Nick miss clean sweep

Nathan and Nick Haire, Hillsborough Social, missed out on a clean sweep at the Lisburn Qualifiers for the National Championships when they lost in the pairs, after winning in the singles, triples and fours.

Paul Reid and Eddie Marsden, Ballinderry, ended their hopes in the section decider after the Haires had beaten Raymond Gourley and Desmond Brownlie, Loughaghery, and the Haires had won against Brendan Magennis and Alex O’Rourke, St Joseph’s.

The winners will meet David Lee and Roy Kennedy, Priesthill Methodist, who won against Victor Greer and Brian Kerr, Anahilt Presbyterian and then beat Stevie and Con Mulholland, St Joseph’s, who won against Patricia Halliday and Glen Wilson, Annahilt Parish.

Gordon and Raymond Stubbs, Ballinderry beat Mel McQuillan/George McLernon, Eglantine and won against Charlie Poots/Jim Harvey, Anahilt Presbyterian, who had beaten Brian Maguire/Jim Cunningham, St Paul’s.

Their opposition in the decider will be Philip Dennison/Noel Graham, Loughaghery who beat David Peden/Michael Beattie, Ballinderry. In this group Norman Martin/Karen Ellison, Magheragall Presbyterian beat John and Teresa Cushnahan, Rock.

Second final for Hillsborough three

There was a second win at the Lisburn Qualifiers for the National Championships for Andy Riley, Nathan and Nick Haire, Hillsborough Social when they reached the triples decider. They won against Paul Reid, Gordon and Raymond Stubbs, Ballinderry in the section decider, having beaten Eric Ashton, St Colman’s Dunmurry. Stubbs had earlier beaten clubmate, Keith Morrison. Eddie Marsden, Ballinderry, beat Derek McCallion, St Joseph’s and Raymond Gourley, Loughaghery, won against Glen Harvey, Anahilt Presbyterian. Gourley’s triple, including Desmond Brownlie and Philip Dennison reached the overall final with victory over Marsden’s three which included Noel Marsden and David Peden.
