Torrens delighted to get that elusive first home win

COLERAINE captain, Wilson Torrens, was delighted that his side had finally recorded their first home win of the season.

Speaking after the game Torrens praised his players efforts.

“I asked our batsmen to remain focused and bat the Saints out of the game,” he said. “At one stage we were looking at a target of around 200, which on a tricky pitch was always going to be a reasonable total, but with some fine hitting towards the end I knew 246 was always going to be enough.

“Having said that, we were taking nothing for granted and I then asked our bowlers to do what they’ve been doing all season and just put the ball in the right areas. The bowlers didn’t let me down and they got their just rewards. Stevie bowled superbly and figures of 10 overs for just 11 runs shows why he received a deserved call-up to the Ireland-A squad.

“It was also great to see young Scott continue the form that he showed midweek for the Ireland U17s. We now need to remain focused for the final 5 games and will be pushing hard to try and finish in the top half of the table.”

Torrens also paid tribute to Coleraine’s youth convenor, Neil Morrison, who will be leaving the club at the end of the season following his move to Belfast.

“Neil has been magnificent for our second XI for the past number of seasons and has also played a significant part in the coaching of our youngsters,” said Wilson.

“Indeed, the likes of Scott Campbell and Rishi Chopra, who have represented Ireland at underage level, have both benefitted from Neil’s coaching and words of encouragement. It was great to be able to give Neil an opportunity to play for the 1st XI and he didn’t let anyone down.

“He took a catch and then bowled four overs claiming 2 for 25. He will certainly be missed about the club.”
