Torrens praises young stars

COLERAINE Firsts captain Wilson Torrens praised the club's youth policy following their victory over league leaders Fox Lodge.

Torrens in fact dropped himself for the game following the defeat against Strabane the previous day preferring instead to recall Andrew Douglas following his Man of the Match performance against Bready in the Intermediate Cup final.

“We discussed the team immediately after the Strabane game with the thoughts of bringing back Andrew Douglas, who had bowled well in our previous couple of games," he explained.

"Andrew won the Man of the Match award the previous day taking nine wickets during the match and we thought he deserved the chance to come back into the first XI. It was difficult trying to decide who to leave out of the team so I decided youth was the better option and I stood down.

“We have built on the success of our youth policy over the past few years and seeing five teenagers in the side performing well is extremely pleasing. Stephen Harper (19) scored runs at the top of the order, Rishi Chopra (14) bowled extremely well and showed great maturity for such a young lad, and Scott Campbell (16) improves everyday with both bat and ball.

With the Douglas brothers, Paul (16) and Andrew (17) continuing to develop all aspects of their game we are very hopeful that the team will continue to progress in the right direction."

The only thing missing right now is a home victory to give the whole club something to cheer about and they’ll certainly be looking for those two points in their next game when St Johnston visit Sandel Lodge on Sunday 8 August starting at 1pm.
