Tough cyclingweekend for Madden

LOCAL cyclist John Madden, who races for Curran Racing/Bann Wheelers, had two tough back to back road races last weekend.

He finished third over all and was the first veteran rider (40 years of age plus) in the grueling Madigan GP on Saturday. On Sunday he finished in the main bunch of riders who completed the hilly Tour of Armagh race on Sunday.

Madden’s result on Saturday was his best yet at the Madigan event. “I have never made the podium at the Madigan GP in the three years I have competed in this event before so am really pleased” said Madden. “I missed the break on Sunday but chased hard with 5 other top riders only to be caught by the main bunch with 5 km to go. I have had a great weekend and will use the training effect to raise my level for the remainder of the season” Madden went on to add.

Madden, who lives in Ballycastle and is an associate member of Bann Wheelers cycling club in Coleraine, has some important races coming up including the Ulster road race championships and the Ulster 10 and 25 time trial championships. Let’s hope he continues to enjoy his racing and success comes in the Ballycastle rider’s direction in the near future.
