Tour of Armagh race on Sunday

Starting from Victoria Street at noon, it covers a similar route as in previous years.

The tough climb of Keady mountain is included in the 100 kilometre route, before the cyclists make their way back to a finish on Lurgan’s Gilford road sometime between 2pm and 2.30pm in the afternoon.

Of the Lurgan based cyclists on the entry list, perhaps John Heverin will be the one from whom most will be expected.

Other club riders on the list are Michael Murray, Martin McConville and Conor Grimes.

The Tour of Armagh has been an annual event for more than 50 years. The winner will hold the Patsy O’Connor Memorial Cup, in memory of one of Lurgan’s great cyclists.

Several of the Clann Eireann youth squad were in action at the Orangefield Track last weekend, taking part in an interprovincial competition.

For most of them it was their first real competition on the banked track, and by all accounts, their mentors were well impressed, especially as Ulster took the honours over the Munster and Leinster opposition. Well done to Alana O’Hagan, Kelvin Nash, Ruairi Grimes, Ethan Flavelle and Declan Mulholland,

Two Clann Eireann cyclists competed in the Tour of Omagh three day last weekend.

Kenny McConaghy was placed 52nd at the end of four stages and Jerome Donnelly was 60th from 90 starters.The race was won by Karol Dolan of the promoting Omagh Wheelers club.

In last Tuesday’s interclub time trial, the only Clannsman to make the top ten was Declan Mulholland in fourth place.

Next Tuesday the local interclub league is a ten miles time trial to be run by the Apollo cycling team.
