Town to host Strongman Classic event

Larne Leisure Centre is set to host next month’s Four Nations Irish Strongman Classic.

The event is expected to attract some of the UK’s strongest men, while local hopes lie with Chris McNaghten (pictured), founder of Big Bear Powerlifting Club.

“We’ve got the likes of Simon Johnston, a UK Strongest Man competitor, and we have Brian Irwin who is probably the strongest man ever to come out of Northern Ireland and isn’t long back from the British Championsips,” said Chris.

He added: “Among the events, we have the Hummer Tyre Deadlift which is four tyres stacked on to a deadlift bar, and we’re expecting ... well over 400 kilos to be lifted there. It will be big, big weights lifted by big beasts of men.”

With entertainment for all the family, including a kids’ play area, the show, which will feature six gruelling strength tests, takes place on April 12 with tickets priced £7.50 available now.
