Track and field season underway

THE track and field season got underway last Thursday evening at the Mary Peters track where Lagan Valley Athletic Club hosted the young athletes and senior meeting with excellent performances all round coming from those athletes competing for Dromore Athletic Club.

The sprints were first up and Dromore got off to a great start with Robin Cantley having a great run to win the 80m boys born 1999/2001 race in 11.84s (PB) and later on in the evening showing his all round talent in winning the long with a jump of 3m73cms (PB).

The winning streak continued in the 100m boys born 1995/6 with Conor Browne making his first appearance for the club. It was a medal winning debut with his super run for gold in 12.26s (PB). Fourth in the same age group was David Cantley with another great run in 13.37s (PB).

Neil Martin had his first race in a couple of seasons and can be more than pleased with his fifth place in his 100m heat in the boys 1993/4 with a time of 13.88s as he has been struggling with breathing problems for quite a while.

Nicole Martin ended the sprint races for the Dromore club on a high with her fine run taking second place in the senior womens’ 100m in 13.7s.

The track races moved on to the 1500m and here the Dromore club excelled once again with Timothy McCracken giving a super double medal winning performance over the three and three quarter laps in the boys 1997/8 race where he won the first race of two in front-running style, claiming his second medal for fastest over both races and the added bonus of his personal best finish time of 5m11.1s.

Julie Turley, who has been having a great season on the roads, had her first ever track race in the senior womens and girls 1993/4 combined race where she took it out from the gun and was never headed from the start to the finish for a fine win in 5m0.0secs.
