Training under way for SPAR Causeway Coast Triathlon

Top competitors from around the Island of Ireland will be descending on Portrush bay for the annual SPAR Causeway Coast Triathlon, due to take place on Saturday 16 June.

Organised by the Triangle Triathlon Club based in Coleraine, this event is the ultimate test of athletic endurance and attended by hundreds of people each year. Participants must complete a 1.5km swim in the sea before changing to the 40km cycle course and finishing with a 10km run. Last year’s event was won by Rory Maguire from Monaghan who completed the course in an impressive two hours.

Adam Wilson, SPAR Causeway Coast Triathlon co-ordinator said: “Triangle Triathlon Club in conjunction with SPAR are very excited about hosting this outstanding event on the North Coast. Portrush and the surrounding area provides an ideal location with its stunning beaches and testing cycling and running terrain which will push the athletes to their absolute limit and beyond!

“It is always a fantastic atmosphere with hundreds of athletes and their families down for the weekend.”

“This year will also see relay teams being able to enter, so if you and two of your friends can swim, cycle and run between you, you too can come and get a taste of the triathlon action.”

Nigel Gray Henderson Retail Director, sponsors of the SPAR Causeway Triathlon said: “SPAR is delighted to once again sponsor this fantastic athletic event that celebrates the highest level of athletic endurance.

“SPAR stores are located in the heart of local communities throughout the Causeway coast and this is an excellent opportunity for us to support up and coming sporting talent and encourage healthy and active lifestyles on our doorstep.”
