Trainor set to sign

GLENAVON triallist Philip Trainor is all set to sign a contract at Mourneview Park after impressing boss Marty Quinn on his debut.

The Kilmore Rec striker played an hour of the Blues’ 2-2 draw with Ballyclare Comrades last Saturday and looked a real talent despite struggling with a groin injury. He showed great pace alongside Tony Grant and despite not getting himself on the scoresheet, is likely to be offered a contract at the club.

“I thought he did well and he’s a very quick lad,” Quinn told the ‘MAIL.’

“He’s got quick feet and you can see the goalscorer in him. He scored 30 odd goals for Kilmore Rec last season, albeit in the Amateur League. I think he’s a natural goalscorer and hopefully he can mature with us now.

“I want to give him another game. He’s got a groin injury at the minute and that’s held him back a bit but he certainly looked good and he’s very keen as well.”

However, unlikely to be joining the club is Distillery man Peter McCann after it emerged that a fee would have to be paid by Glenavon if they wanted to prise him away from his current club. McCann had thought he could leave on a free but after a legal battle, it was concluded that this was not the case. Quinn has thus all but ruled out bringing the 28 year-old to the club.

“The goalkeeping situation has put a spanner in those works at the minute,” he said.

“What little funds I have available I have to put towards a goalkeeper. Peter McCann is on hold at this minute in time and let’s see what I can come up with. I can’t have both a quality goalkeeper and Peter McCann.”

Meanwhile Michael McKerr has gone on trial at Scottish Division One side Queen of the South and Rory Hamill has joined Ladrbokes.com Championship One club Bangor as his new job meant that he couldn’t commit enough time to make his bid for a new contract at Glenavon.
