Trevor Woods wins the Haughton Smyth Cup

AS the centenary of the golf club draws near, it is important to remember a cup that is as old as the club itself.

The Haughton Smyth Cup has been played for every year since 1918.

The Smyth family, who lived at Brookfield, were instrumental in the formation of the club. When Captain Haughton Smyth was killed on July 1, 1916 at Thiepvale Wood during the Great War, his family donated a silver cup in his honour, to be played for every year. It is one of the most prestigious trophies in the club.

This year’s final was between five handicapper Trevor Woods and eighteen handicapper Adrian Barry.

Adrian, on his way to the final, had beaten Stuart Hunter, Jonathan Ward and Timothy Hodgett. But, in the final, he came up against a player really on top of his game.

Trevor Woods went round in sub par figures and he won the final by 3 and 2. Trevor was delighted as this result secured his place in the Senior Cowdy Cup final.

As for Adrian, it was a superb effort and he still has the Junior Cowdy final to look forward to.
