Tributes paid to Ballyclare cyclist Gordon Scott

Mr Scott, who was 54, passed away on Saturday (July 11) after taking part in a time-trial event in Co. Down.

His funeral was due to take place on Friday morning (July 17) at Ballyclare Presbyterian Church.

Gordon, who was affectionatley known as ‘Scotty’, had been racing since his teens. The highlight of his cycling career came in 1982 when he represented Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane.

East Antrim Cycling Club paid tribute to Mr. Scott in a statement published on social media. “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we face the future without Gordon Scott, our great friend and stalwart of our club,” the statement read. “Scotty, as he was known to all of us, was as deeply committed to his family as he was to cycling. A true gentleman of the road whom many in the cycling community will remember for his immense strength of character and classy riding style. Our thoughts and prayers are with Kirsty, Alex, Stephen and his mother.”

Gordon had been a member of Kingsmoss Cycling Club for many years, and the club paid tribute to him on their Facebook page.

“On behalf of the members of Kingsmoss Cycling Club we are devastated to hear the news of the passing of Gordon Scott.

Scotty rode and represented the club and Northern Ireland for many years as well as being our club chairman before migrating over to race with East Antrim CC. We offer our condolences to Kirsty and Gordon’s wider family and friends.”

Saturday’s race organisers Velo Club Iveagh also released a statement saying they were saddened to learn of his passing.
