Trimble keeping a lid on ‘slam’ talk

The Irish are being talked up in a lot of circles after their demolition of Wales in the last round of fixtures.

But the Coleraine man insisted people need to ‘cop on’ talking about it before Ireland have set foot in Twickenham or Stade de France.

“We’re competing in the Six Nations to win the championship, of course,” Trimble said.

“But to be talking about the Slam before you’ve even gone to ­Twickenham or Paris just seems mad, you know?

“Joe (Schmidt) has talked about the fact that we deserve a lot of the plaudits we are getting after the Wales game, it was a big performance and a big result.

“But as Warren Gatland said, Wales didn’t really perform as well as we’ve seen them in previous years.

“We are definitely going to have to up it a couple more levels to get the same sort of result in ­Twickenham.

“There’s people getting carried away. We’ve won two games and there is definitely something happening with this group of boys and to be a part of it at this stage, I’m loving it.”

Ahead of a potential 53rd cap in London, Trimble’s determined to land a third Triple Crown – but admits they’d all be blown away by a single Grand Slam.

“I think I have won two Triple Crowns – it’s all I’ve won with Ireland so it means something.

“But, when you look at Triple Crowns in comparison to the Grand Slam we won in 2009 there is no comparison at all,” insisted a determined Trimble.
