Triple success as Alpha take titles at Mount Pleasant

Tony Stephenson, Alpha’s top ranked player, lifted the gents singles and doubles titles at the Mount Pleasant Open to get his season off to a great start.

The Irish number two was rarely troubled in his opening two rounds of the singles, overcoming both Ryan Hamill 21-5 51-4 and Alan Colgan 21-12 21-3 to book his place in the semi-final against Nigel Boyne of Dublin.

But it was the Lisburn player who found himself one set in arrears when he lost the opening set 21-15 and whilst he was to take the semi-final into the deciding set by winning the second comfortably 21-12, he was to come through 21-16 in the final set.

The No2 seed from Dundalk Liam O’Leary was having a few problems in the other semi-final against David Walsh (Sligo), and having had to be content with the runners-up place last year, it was O’Leary who had dropped the opening set.

With last year’s beaten finalist O’Leary failing to make it through to the final 21-12 16-21 21-16, it was David Walsh who was seeking to create a further upset but the Lisburn player was always in control as he took the title 21-12 21-12.

In the Mens Doubles the Alpha pairing of Tony Murphy and Tony Stephenson fought off the challenge from the defending champions Daniel Magee and Niall Tierney, who were pushed in their semi-final encounter by Mark Dolan and David Walsh.

Tony Murphy added the mixed doubles title with Jennie King. Having come through a tough three-setter against Leo Castilla and Petra Rosolova it was the Murphy/King pair who took the opening set 21-17.

The second was a close affair with Daniel Magee and Fiona Glennon edging ahead to take it into the deciding set 18-21 only for the former pair to win game out 21-11.
