Tullylish go three points clear with sixth win

Tullylish recorded their sixth win in a row on Friday night to go three points clear at the top of the Second Division when they won by eight points in Laurencetown.

The hosts were quickest to settle and Shannon Drainey got them off the mark with a pointed free in the first minute.

John McKiverigan doubled Tullylish’s lead two minutes later and then Kevin McCartan burst forward and pointed from a sharp angle.

Chris McGovern took advantage on of a mix up in the Ballymartin defence to score the only goal of the game.

Cathal Doyle opened Ballymartin’s account before wing back Noel Kerr grabbed another point a minute later.

Doyle and Drainey then traded frees to leave Tullylish 1-4 to 0-3 ahead at the end of the first quarter. Tullylish finished the half strongly and pointed frees from Drainey and McGovern left them leading 1-6 to 0-3 at half-time.

The visitors were first out of the blocks with points from Ryan McCullough and Connor O’Hare. Tullylish responded with similar scores from Justin McCartan and Connor Magee and a superb 50-yard free from Shannon Drainey.

Chris McGovern extended the home team’s lead with a free in the eighth minute before Kieran O’Hare helped the travelling support find their voice with three unanswered scores to reduce the deficit to five points with 15 minutes left.

After 10 minutes without a score Tullylish recorded two points in as many minutes from Joe McDermott, after one of his trademark runs, and a fifth point from Drainey.

An O’Hare free in the 27th minute was Ballymartin’s last score and two late frees from McGovern concluded the scoring.
