Turkey time at Portstewart

SEVEN turkeys were won at Portstewart Golf Club on Saturday with fifteen handicapper Conal Loughrey topping the charts with his 43 points.

Conal breezed round the front nine in three over par for 23 points. This included a birdie three at the Rifle Range, the hardest hole of the eighteen, which yielded four points alone!

His back nine was only slightly less impressive in that 20 points were added. No birdies this time but a lot of solid pars and only one single pointer at the eighteenth.

John Love finished two points back, playing off nine. John birdied the second and the eighth, both par fours, to balance up some single pointers and gain 21 points from the front nine. Another birdie, a two at the twelfth, kept up the momentum and 20 points were added for a finishing 41 points and the second turkey.

Dinner Day Bowl winner Jim Bann took the third bird for his effort of 39 points. The twelve handicapper was five over par gross going out and this gave him 19 points. A solid start to the back nine was interrupted by a no score at the par three twelfth but a birdie four at the thirteenth made up for that. A nice steady run in gave Jim another 20 points for his total of 39. Jim’s good back nine kept him in front of Chris Lundy who also carded 39 points.

Chris potted a couple of birdies on the front nine, a two at the third and a four at the seventh, for 21points. A steady eighteen back completed his 39 points haul. The final 39er came from Geoff Walls who had consecutive birdies at the par five seventh and the par four eighth to boost his front nine tally to 22. A birdie four was then logged at the fourteenth but a few single pointers curbed him a little and 17 points took his total to 39.

Russell Stewart and Trevor Nutt posted 38s for the final turkeys. Russell had a relatively poor 16 points out but a couple of birdies on the return leg gave him 22 back for a sum of 38. Trevor also carded an average front half score of 17 but was much improved on the homeward leg where a birdie two at the twelfth counterbalanced a nasty 8 at the fourteenth and added 21 for his total of 38.
