Turning back time at Croker

THE clock was turned back at Croke Park when the 1960/61 Down team that booked their place in history by becoming the first side to take the Sam Maguire Cup across the border were feted by the GAA to mark the golden jubilee of their feat.

Down chairman Seamus Walsh said: "The team of 1960/61 wrote themselves into the history books and in doing so heralded the dawn of a new era for gaelic football in Ulster.

"Many of the players remain legendary figures in a GAA context having not only achieved success with their county but with the provincial side in the Railway Cup when it was one of the biggest competitions in the annual fixtures calendar."
