ROCK

Lotto numbers for week commencing 15th October were 1, 2, 4, 23. At the draw in McLernons Bar, one person matched three numbers: Dessie Doyle(Tirnaskea) won £100. This weeks Jackpot is £2850.

Rock completed their league programme for the year with a draw away to Stewartstown under lights on Thursday night last. In what was a very competitive match, Rock got of to a great start with Aidan McGarrity scoring a goal in the first couple of minutes. Both sides exchanged points for the remainder of the half which saw Rock lead 1-4 to 0-6 at the break. Rock looked the more likely winners when James McCreesh scored Rocks second goal in the second half but with the help of a few late points Stewartstown managed to salvage a draw which was probably a fair enough result for both teams. Final score was Stewartstown 0-15 Rock 2-9. Rock team and scorers: Barry Coyle; Collie McWilliams, Peter Girvan, Ruairi McVeigh; Mark McAleer(0-1), Ryan Crilly, Tommy Bloomer; Ciaran Gourley(0-1), Enda McWilliams; Cathal McWilliams, Conor McCreesh(0-4), Diarmaid Carroll(0-2); Eamonn Ward, James McCreesh(1-0), Aidan McGarrity(1-1). EOGHAN RUADH

Last week’s Nifty Fifty winner was Mr Benny McIntosh. Benny, a popular and long time stalwart of the local Clarkes club was also a hurler and indeed managed and trained the club seniors in the early 80s. Benny didn’t match the bonus number drawn so the £5000 Jackpot is still there to be won. For your chance to win why not purchase a ticket from any of our weekly sellers? It was another busy week on the playing front as our minors contested the last of Tyrone’s hurling championships on Saturday at Eglish against Éire Óg an Charraig Mhór. After last weekend’s semi final when Eoghan Ruadh struggled to get any rhythm to their game, Saturday’s final proved to be a completely different game. The Éire Óg challenge simply didn’t materialise and Eoghan Ruadh strolled to a victory they wouldn’t have dreamt of a week ago. It was an afternoon when everything went right for Eoghan Ruadh as they stormed into a 1:02 to 0:00 early lead courtesy of a Paddy McQuaid goal and points from Ricky Kelly and Duibhir Marshall. Eoghan Ruadh continued to pile on the pressure and the scores, with Ricky Kelly, Ciarán McCrudden, Duibhir Marshall, Conor Mullan, Matthew Mulgrew and that man McQuaid giving the Carmen defence a torrid time. Kelly in particular tormented the Éire Óg defence, firing over points almost at will or stting up scores for his teammates. The Eoghan Ruadh defence was equally mean with Pádraig Mallon, Michael Donnelly, Kevin Hughes, Paddy McStravóg, Ruaraí DevlinRuari and the outstanding Marc McCrory repeatedly quelling any threat Éire Óg posed. Michael Maneely, showing the benefits of a year in the senior ranks alongside Eoin Quinn formed a terrific midfield pairing. Sean Paul McGuckin was assured and cool under pressure in goal. By half time it was 2:10 to 0:03, all of Eoghan Ruadh’s scores coming from play. Eoghan Ruadh increased the pressure in the second half, picking off scores at will and by the final whistle the score had reached 4-20 to 0-6, incredibly all of Eoghan Ruadh’s scores coming from play. So that’s a clean sweep of championship trophies for Eoghan Ruadh this year within Tyrone. Our minors next outing will be against Naomh ColmCille in the re-schedulaed league match, next Saturday at 3:30. Congratulations to all involved, particularly Stephen Donnelly, John Devlin, Mark Winters and Pádraig McHugh who have all helped with this team. The team now advance to the Ulster Club minor competition against either the Donegal or Fermanagh champions. Our U13s qualified for the semi finals of the Derry Elite Hurling League (Division 1A) against Ballinscreen. Ballinascreen, perhaps the leading team in this age group across Ulster, had beaten Eoghan Ruadh last weekend. And there was to be no reversal when the teams met on Sunday morning, Ballinascreen again accounting for the Tyrone lads. However it was a much improved performance from Ógra Eoghan Ruadh and overall marks some progress this year as last year we were competing in the B section. Before we leave the under 13s a special word of thanks to all the parents who provided transport and support over each of the last five weekends. And while she won’t necessarily like to see her name in lights, a special word of thanks to Jackie Robbins. Jackie, a long time supporter of Eoghan Ruadh who hails from Geashill, County Offaly, not only follows the teams but her car doubles as a virtual Meals on Wheels with homemade soups, sandwiches, and all manner of goodies for the team and its supporters. Without these parents and volunteers our club would be lost. Indeed, appreciative club members take as much pleasure from the spirit of our volunteers as we do in our teams doing well. We are not alone in that, every club has them and maybe we should shout a bit louder about them a little more often.

It was a sad and poignant week for one of our most respected and hard-working coaches and committee member, Martin McAleer, whose brother Anthony passed away on Tuesday past. The McAleer family has been tremendous supporters of the club down through the years. Eoghan Ruadh extends deepest sympathy to Anthony’s partner Wendy, his sons Michael and Justin, his daughter Annemarie, Anthony’s brothers Michael, Patrick, Seamus, Martin, sisters Bernie, Patricia and Marion and his grandchildren Donnacha and Turlach Antón and indeed the entire McAleer family circle. Ar Dheis Dé go Raibh a anam. Also this week the GAA across Ulster lost a great servant in Matt Fitzpatrick, former GAA correspondent with the Irish News. You could always count on Matt for a report on some obscure school or club competition that manys another journalist might not think worthy of coverage. But Matt understood the importance. He was a founder member of Carryduff GAC in 1972, a sort of GAA disciple, at a time when the GAA would not have been particularly welcome in that part of Down. Ar Dheis Dé go Raibh a anam fosta.

And finally, can those club members who ordered and paid for club tracksuits please contact Cathal McErlean, asap.

The annual youth presentation dinner for 2012 takes place on Friday November 2 in Doire Treasc.

NCC handballers Nathan Quinn and Conor Devlin played doubles in a late night match at the World Handball Championships on Tuesday in Dublin. Unthough they didn’t win their game, they gained a lot from the experience. They also were present to see Cavan’s Paul Brady win his fourth consecutive World Senior Title. Michael O’Neill also played the week before along with a good representation from St Joseph’s College Coalisland in games against St Ciarán’s Ballygawley and Holy Trinity, Cookstown. Handball every Wednesday night in the Hall at Clochóg. Primary School ages 7-8pm. Secondary School ages 8-9pm. Fáilte romhaibh uilig.

In the 50 year history of Magaeen Cup Senior Colleges ‘A’ Hurling in Ulster, there has never been a team from Tír Eoghain participating. All changed this year with the first ever East Tyrone combined colleges side. The Cilles had representation on the side with Seáncao Ó Corra, Paddy McCusker, Jack Ryan and John Lee. Hopefully, over the next few years, this laudable effort will develop into a competitive force challenging for honours. At the individual level, St Patricks Academy, St Josephs Donaghmore (first ever team), and St Josephs Coalisland are all competing at various levels with NCC players to the fore. The Ulster schools deserve a lot of credit as they have developed competitions at different levels to give everyone a chance to compete at their grade and enjoy a game of hurling. Mól an óige agus tiocfaidh sí.
