U17s reach semi

Moneyslane U17s 7

Warrenpoint 0

THERE was a feast of goals as Slane’s U17s entertained Warrenpoint in the quarter final of the Mid-Ulster Cup on Saturday.

Slane were really up for this game after Warrenpoint beat them three weeks ago.

They started the game the stronger with Jamie Wharton having a couple of early chances. It was Slane who took the lead when Wharton latched onto a long ball to side foot past the keeper.

Warrenpoint never gave up and thanks to some poor finishing and stern defending Slane held onto their lead.

Then on 34 minutes Slane got their second of the game. Wharton found himself one on one with the keeper and there was only winner.

Slane came out in the second half looking to kill of the game and they did just that. With eight minutes of the half gone up popped Wharton for his hat trick.

Three minutes later he got his fourth and game over – or so the manager thought.

On came William Martin and he was only on the field two minutes when he got in on the act. What a goal it was, from such a tight angle he lobbed the keeper.

Then five minutes later Slane made it six, Matthew McKnight this time putting the ball in the net.

Three minutes later it was Wharton to finish the game off with his fifth and Slane’s seventh.

This was a result that Slane deserved. It could have been worse for Warrenpoint but for some great goalkeeping.

Man of the match goes to Jamie Wharton with his five goal tally on the day. Next up for Slane is a semi-final clash against Ballinamallard on April 17.
