U8s held away to Rostrevor

CLANN na Banna U8s opened up their playing season with an away fixture at Rostrevor on Sunday morning.

The team traveled with good support from parents and with players eager to display the skills developed in training over the past few weeks.

The early part of the game was a tight affair before Dara Scullion opened the scoring with a point after good work by Gartland. Rostrevor then pointed before a goal left Bann with work to do. From defence, Kerr laid off to Vaughan who then broke through the Rostrevor defence to goal.

The home team rallied but were met with solid defence by Boyle and Magee. In midfield, Aaron Cull now began to show his strength and scored a point from distance.

Rostrevor's scores shortly after half time could easily have deflated, Bann but Katie McConville led the fightback in defence and another Dara Scullion point following good work by Dara Moan.

Bann were now getting on top with the youthful Scullion brothers and C Scappatici combining well at half forward.

However, Rostrevor refused to give up and scored again before a second Vaughan goal put distance between the sides.

To their credit, the hosts again came good and despite repeated counter attacks led by Cunningham, Rostrevor secured the draw in the dying minutes of the game.

Bann showed all the desired qualities that hopefully will carry them through the season and this experience should serve them well over the coming months.
