U8s unlucky in final of tournament

HAVING already completed their regular season, Clann na Banna came out of hibernation and took up a late invitation from Carryduff for their annual U7 tournament.

Despite having to go ahead without a few of their regular U8 members, Bann soon found their rhythm against the host club and solid work from Aoife McNally and Dara Moan in particular saw them through.

Their second game paired Bann against Tyrone side Moy. Positional changes saw Carlo Scappiticci moved to goals and he proved his worth with some great kick outs and netminding.

Up front, Bann again prevailed with Helen Vaughan notching a hat-trick of goals. At the back, Sean Og Magee let nothing past.

Bredagh were next up and despite close family ties with his opposite number, Dara Scullion was not to be distracted from his midfield duties which were crucial in deciding this close encounter.

After lunch, Bann faced Armagh side Carrickcruppen in the semi-final and this seemed to inspire young Aaron Moan who time and again drove through to set up the his teammates. Liam Vaughan brought his tackling game to this encounter but this was still not enough to prevent Carrickcruppen, leading by two as the game moved towards it's conclusion.

However, when Donal Scullion was awarded an injury-time free , he had only one thing on his mind. With no margin for error, his inch perfect effort sailed beyond the Carrickcruppen defence who had decamped to their own goal-line.

With time having elapsed, the referee blew for full time and Bann had reached the final. Perhaps suffering from their exertions in the semi, tournament favorites Glenn proved to be a bridge too far for this young team and the bigger team edged home.

Without any available subs, each Bann team member continued to play to the finish and must be highly commended for their efforts. Special mention must also go to guest mentor for the day, Jack Moan who used his experience to advise and encourage his clubmates.

This has been another great season for Bann U8's who continue to represent the club and their families with distinction. A sincere thanks to all players, parents and mentors for their efforts over the season.
