Three Larne Grammar girls have been called up to Ulster Hockey’s Under-18 squad ahead of this month’s inter-provincial tournament.

Ruth Maguire and Ayeisha McFerran have been selected on the panel, while Alex Ogilby has been included for the first time.

The three-day tournament kicks off later this month in Cork where Ulster begin their defence of the title when they take on the South East (Friday, Ocober 18), before meeting Leinster the following day. They play Connacht on Sunday, October 20.

Year 14 pupils Maguire and McFerran are experienced youth players for Ulster but for Ogilby it’s new ground after the Year 13 pupil got the nod.

“I was so excited when I heard I had been selected for the squad,” she said.

“I have been going to trials and training since Easter. I was relieved that the hours of fitness work final paid off. I’m so glad I have the chance to put on the kit and represent Ulster at the Interpros.”

Along with McFerran, a talented goalkeeper, Ogilby currently plays with Premier League Randalstown at club level, while Maguire is part of the first-team with Jordanstown-based Ulster Elks.

Helen Russell, from Larne Ladies Hockey Club, added: “We wish former club members Alex and Ayeisha every success, along with their LGS team-mate, Ruth.

“Alex has this season followed Ayeisha to Randalstown and although we will miss her pace and contribution to a great team spirit, she thoroughly deserves her place at both premier league and provincial levels.”
