Ulster Cup team wins

THE Banbridge Ulster Cup team played Gracehill Golf Club at home in the first leg of their second round match last Sunday.

Alan Dale is the captain of this team and his lieutenant, Brian Mulholland, ably assists him. Between them, they have gathered together a formidable squad.

In the Ulster Cup, a good result at home is essential. Anything less than a 5-2 win puts too much pressure on the away leg.

Peter Hillen was off first and he beat Herbie McCook 4 and 3.

Jim Gracey was in good form as he beat David Ratcliffe 2 and 1.

Ronnie Halliday unexpectantly lost 5 and 3 to Rodney Hutchinson.

Jim Matthews regained the advantage with a 6 and 4 win over James Chestnutt.

Neville Kerr was swinging beautifully as he beat Jim Gillan 6 and 5.

Gareth McGregor emerged from a tight match, a one up winner over Rodney Donnell..

The final game was always going to be close but Banbridge had the right man for the job. Philip McCourt is an astute match player and he beat David Steen 2 up.

This was a brilliant result for Alan Dale and his Ulster Cup team.

They will take a 6-1 lead to Gracehill next Sunday and, barring a complete collapse, Banbridge should advance into the third round.

We will keep our fingers crossed.
