Under-13's through to final

IN excellent playing conditions Coleraine Under-13s contested the semi-final of the Plate competition, playing away to local rivals Ballymoney.

With the wind at their backs Coleraine started brightly when centre Alistair Irwin, showing a turn of speed, outpaced the Ballymoney cover to give Coleraine an early lead. This score was added to shortly after when the other centre Daniel Scott scored a fine try to extend the Coleraine lead to 12-0.

Ballymoney fought back soon after when a forward drive saw them score close to the corner flag. Coleraine’s reply to this was immediate when winger Shea Eastwood rounded off a fine move to score close to the posts. The same player added another score before half time to leave the halftime score at 26-5 to Coleraine.

Playing into the wind in the second half Ballymoney exerted a period of pressure on the seven man Coleraine pack. Two trys were conceded to reduce the lead to 26-17.

In reply Coleraine upped their game and two more scores from Alastair Irwin, who was excellent all day, leaving the final score at 38-22 to Coleraine.

This was a free flowing match, laced with some fine trys. The back line threatened every time they got the ball. Centres Alastair Irwin and Daniel Scott and winger Shea Eastwood had good games and scrum half Graham McAleese gave his opposite number a torrid time.

The pack performed manfully despite being a player down. James Breslin and Nial Hunter played well and wing forward Callum McAleese put in some superb tackles which foiled several Ballymoney attacks.
