Under-17's edge past Letterkenny

LETTERKENNY came to visit Coleraine Under-17s on Saturday and it turned out to be a perfect day for rugby.

The match started with some well structured phases from the home side but resolute defence from the visitors kept them out. The remainder of the half followed the same pattern, some half breaks from both sides, as well as stern defence, leaving the score 0-0 at half-time.

The second half started much the same as the first ended but now tiredness was creeping in and space was becoming more common but still neither side could score.

With ten minutes left Coleraine finally made the breakthrough when a fine switch move in the backs created space for Peter McGonagle to show his pace, beating three men and scoring in the corner.

Letterkenny were not finished and they upped the tempo keeping the home side pinned in their own 22 but Coleraine’s defence held firm including a magnificent try saving tackle from Paddy McCombe in the last play of the game.

This was a fine team performance from the hosts winning a tight but entertaining game 5-0. Special mention must go to Luke Beattie, Daniel McKinley and Paddy McCombe in the forwards and Mark Hazelton, Alex McCauley and Peter McGonagle in the backs.
