Under-17's win Mid-Ulster Shield

COLERAINE Academy Under-17's won the first of three trophies they are going for this season with an impressive win over Newry side Windmill Stars at Cookstown on Saturday.

The start couldn’t have been better with Luke Bradley rising to score with a glancing header from a Steven Doherty cross in the first minute. Four minutes later Danny Austin floated a great ball over the Newry side's defence, Sam Boylan held off the defender and scored.

Just before half time Windmill Stars showed they were still a threat hitting the bar twice in the space of five minutes.

The second half was a real battle with the Coleraine defence of Jordan O Neill, Che Bradley, Paul Milliken and Stephen Doherty coming under a bit more pressure.

But 20 minutes into the half Sam Boylan broke through and scored again to seemingly seal the win. However, Windmill Stars didn’t give up and pulled back two goals in a matter of minutes to put Coleraine under pressure as the game headed towards a dramatic climax.

But Coleraine held on and got the decisive goal just before the whistle, Jordan O Neill played a ball from defence to Sam Boylan who crossed for Gordon Douglas to slot home and seal a 4-2 win.

The Under-17's still have the League and League Cup to play for in what could be a magical end to the season for them.

The Under-16's also made it through to the final of the Mid Ulster Shield following their semi final victory over Windmill Stars.

The young Bannsiders started brightly moving producing a number of half chances, which were successfully dealt with by a stubborn defence of Windmill Stars.Chris McNeill came closest to opening the scoring when he fired a rasping shot which was parried by the keeper and only to see his second effort cleared by the defence for a corner.

David Healy finally broke the deadlock with what turned out to be the winner when he latched onto a through ball neatly heading it past the central defender and deftly lobbing it past an advancing keeper.

The second half was a repeat of the first with the young Bannsiders in total control though a few slack pieces of play caused a few nervous moments.

They held on though to seal their place in the final against Armagh City where they will be hoping to exact revenge as Armagh knocked them out of the NIBFA Cup at the quarter final stages.

Speaking after the match coach John Ferguson said: "I am delighted for the boys we are in the final it is no less than they deserved."

Stevie McCann added: “The first half display was fantastic we told them at half time we couldn’t fault it and to go out and play the same, but we didn’t, we took our foot off the pedal, and I told them so at the end. They need to be more clinical but they are a great bunch of players to work with and I think very highly of each and everyone of them.

"We have now got a final to look forward to, as have the North West Under-16 team, and with the Under-17's winning their final on Saturday I think it will be a good end to the season for the Academy’s older teams."

Two moments of individual brilliance helped Coleraine to a 2-0 win over Moyola on Saturday.

In the 10th minute, after one of the numerous threatening runs from deep, he was to make throughout the match, Ciaran Ferris slipped the ball to Dario Morelli, who still had to overcome two challenges before driving the ball into the net.

It was the type of goal that has become a hallmark or Dario, who has proved a tormentor of many defenders this season.

The goal promised more with Coleraine strong defensively and giving little opportunity to Moyola to threaten the away team's goal, where Ryan Buckley, again looked authoritative.

Moyola raised their game for the second half and for periods were camped in the Coleraine half but not to the extent that the goal was seriously threatened.

One powerfully struck free kick from Ryan Hunter nearly brought what would have been a memorable goal but for the reliable hands of the Moyola keeper. With 10 minutes remaining, the anxiety in the Coleraine team was eased when Mathew Kirkpatrick gained just reward for his unfailing efforts, to score despite the close attention of two Moyola defenders. Mathew and his partner, Dario, rightly had the glory but this was a game where any weakness could have brought a different result.

Meanwhile the Under-13 Academy side were 3-1 winners over Dromore Amateurs and the Under-12 Academy side lost out 3-1 to Institute U13’s in their North West & Coleraine Youth League fixture.
