Unique opporunity in Ballymoney

YOUNG junior members of the Japanese Cultural Centre in Ballymoney were excited to discover that the very Martial art they learn at the Centre is also the main focus of the current Childrens BBC television documentary 'Hai! Karate - Journey to Japan'.

The documentary is narrated by popular BBC show host Jonathan Ross, who explains that the purpose of the series is to take a group of

children and there parents, who have difficulty relating to each other, and train them in Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate.

The reason for this is that training in Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate is very unique, and forges strong bonds between those who train in it, therefore improving the parent - child relationship.

Okinawa, a small island group, situated off the southern tip of Japan, is the true birth place of Karate. Goju Ryu was given its name by Okinawan Karate master Chojun Miyagi, whose surname was adopted and made famous by the film makers of the 'Karate Kid' series, who also based the film on Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate and not Japanese Karate-Do.

Shem Mitchell who teaches Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate explains that there are many places offering Japanese Karate training, but because those who teach Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate are expected to be of such a high standard themselves, there is only ONE place in the island of Ireland able to offer training in the true and original art of Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate.

This place is the Japanese Cultural Centre based at Church lane in Ballymoney. It is a claim that Ballymoney can be

proud to boast.
