Valley to host Special Olympics Table Tennis

On Saturday (February 2), 38 athletes from four Special Olympics Clubs throughout Ulster will compete in the Ulster Regional Table Tennis event. It marks the first stage of a journey that could, potentially, see some of the athletes compete at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles in 2015.

Special Olympics Ulster has strong links with Newtownabbey, with both Abbots Cross and Newtownabbey Racers Special Olympics Clubs based in the Borough.

Carole Catling, who represented Abbots Cross Special Olympics Club at the World Summer Games in Athens and brought home a gold medal, will be attending the event at the Valley, where she will be aiming to advance to the LA games.

Newtownabbey’s Deputy Mayor, Alderman Fraser Agnew, commented: “It’s fantastic that the borough can again be at the forefront of all-inclusive sport in Northern Ireland and we welcome athletes from all over the Province to the superb Valley Leisure Centre. I’m certainly looking forward to a high level of competition on the day and I’m sure Abbots Cross will be taking home a few medals.”
