Veteran Logue back to brilliant best

COLERAINE’S Julian Logue rolled back the years to defeat Kieran McMahon 5-2 in the latest Northern Ireland Snooker ranking event at the Cue Club in Newry last Wednesday evening.

The twice Northern Ireland champion dedicated his impressive victory to his family and Willie Eakin and the staff at Potters Snooker Club in Coleraine where Julian has been practising for the past six months.

“I’d been playing and pracitising hard without getting the results but I went to the all-Ireland team championships in Killarney and let the team down badly. It was all in my head. But playing at the Potters has really helped me. I want to thank my wife Karen and my family for their support, Emmett, Shane and Tiernan and Willie Eakin and all the boys at Potters for the use of their excellent facilities.”

Julian was impressive form throughout the ranking tournament, defeating George Brown and Jonathan Kells 3-0 respectively in earlier rounds before beating Darren Dornan 5-3 in the quarter-finals and Dermot McGlinchey in the semi-finals. He took a 2-0 lead in the final and although McMahon pulled a frame back, Julian raced to leads of 4-1 and 4-2 before clinching the match in the seventh frame.

“To be fair to Kieran nothing went right for him on the night,” said Julian. “Everything he tried didn’t work although I have to say I played solidly and made the most of the chances he gave me.”

Now 45 and happily settled down to married life, Julian hopes to continue his winning form at the NI Snooker Championship at Rafters Club in Ballymoney at the end of this month.

His victory in Newry has taken him into the top six in the NI rankings.
