Veterans finish out in front

Harry Cosgrove, skip Ivor Mitchell, Rodney McCarthy and Bobby Boness recorded a 27-12 success thanks to second-half form that produced seven consecutive winning ends.

Skip Mansel Montgomery, Declan McCabrey, Dan Dempsey and Melvyn Hamilton struggled early on to trail 18-10 with two ends left to play.

However, two winning ends reduced the deficit to 18-14 to help overall.

The Lurgan 2 bowlers enjoyed a slick 54-33 success on the fast-running home green to see off Newry.

Peter McGrail, Sam Neill, Derek Henderson and Ronnie McCullough were level at 16-16 by the halfway stage.

Strong second-half bowling pushed the home rink to a 24-22 win.

Alan Briggs, Gordon Bell, Bobby Jones and Gerry Stewart proved in command with a string of high-scoring wins - including an eight-count maximum haul.

It was 25-6 at the midway point towards Lurgan’s 30-11 triumph that will attract attention from rival sides.

On Monday, Lurgan 1 visit Bessbrook and Lurgan 2 entertain Markethill across the Veterans’ League schedule - with both games set to start at 1.30.

The Mid-Ulster League players welcome Richhill tonight (Thursday) from 6.45, with all support welcome.
