Wallace retain Ivan Sloan Cup

THE Wallace High School boys’ hockey 1st X1 retained the Ivan Sloan Cup recently edging out a South Antrim under 18 side in a nine goal thriller at Laurelhill.

This was the closest encounter in a long time as both teams gathered to remember Ivan who was such a great servant to both school and club as an umpire. Played on a balmy September evening the large crowd were treated to a festival of attacking hockey with the Lisburn school eventually triumphing 5 - 4.

Wallace went into the last fifteen minutes of the match 5 - 1 up, Sean Murray(2), Jonny Dalton (2) and co captain Ross Kelly the scorers, but were caught cold on several occasions as the South team worked their way back into the game, clawing back the deficit and almost getting back onto level terms before the final whistle.

As ever, men of the match were voted for by the opposing coaches with Adam Marshall gaining the South accolade and Sean Murray winning the Wallace award.

The new season has seen games being played by both girls and boys teams in Wallace with several encouraging results. There have also been a series of eye catching individual performances with Year 10 pupil Emily Howard scoring six goals in a game for the under 14s against Dungannon Royal School. Year 9 Ben Nelson trumped that goal tally with a magnificent seven against BRA under 13s at Laurelhill recently and has scored an amazing 14 goals in three games for this talented team. Craig Getty has also been in fine form with eight goals in three games for the under 14 X1 whilst 1st X1 co captain Ross Kelly scored four well taken drag flicks in his teams McCullough Cup group game victory over Grosvenor Grammar.

This Saturday sees the boys teams taking on RBAI at Shaws Bridge and the Dub (9am start at both venues), whilst the girls have fixtures away and at Laurelhill against Victoria College. All support as ever is very welcome.
